#antigearporn: Stop Normalizing Pornography

Hey all. Sorry my posts have kind of been off the wall lately. Here’s another one I want to run by you, with your permission of course. I'll also keep it short and sweet. This post will be themed around #gearporn (as can be seen in the image below) and the likes (i.e. #gearslut, #geargasm), or rather themed against them. While I am not entirely certain as to how this utterly disgusting social media trend started, I’m concerned with seeing the end of #gearporn.
A small way you can play a part in this is by using #antigearporn whenever you post a picture of your new, old, or even just Sunday morning gear. I set up an Instagram account for the campaign under the name @love_respect_gear. If I find #antigearporn tagged pictures, I would love to feature them on my page. I would also like to start Facebook and Twitter accounts under that name soon as well; it’s just a matter of getting all my school done.

Reasons I hate #gearporn and want it to end:

1) Porn is a disgusting and incredibly offensive industry. It destroys lives, marriages, leaves one feeling empty, and ultimately takes our eyes off of the Trinity. No one in their right mind just haphazardly brings up an amazing porn video they watched. Why would we even want to compare our lovely pedals to a demeaning picture of a person?

2) Comparing our guitar gear to porn normalizes the concept of porn. Normalizing porn normalizes a destructive lifestyle. Normalizing a destructive lifestyle then destroys society and we then move backwards. Do we want a culture of violent, sex-obsessed animals? I think not. Around 66% of men openly admit to watching porn, and some 12% of women admit to watching porn. I don’t know about you, but that number almost physically hurts to see.

Again, let’s end #gearporn by countering it with #antigearporn. Let’s counter the destruction of love. Let’s normalize healthy relationships. Let's do our part in a small way. Let’s honor God with our lives.

Thanks, y’all.

  1. I agree with this. There are a lot of hashtags for posts and pictures that add the word porn to it, such as "foodporn", " shoeporn", and, yes, even "gearporn". I don't like this trend because it tries to normalize porn by inserting it into unrelated topics, trying to be trendy. As someone who struggles mightily with porn, I'm glad to see this post and what you had to say about it. And I'm in total agreement.
